One of the most prestigious hospitals in the Texas area was faced with the challenge of attracting and retaining a qualified staff necessary to meet its coding needs. A world renowned cancer institute and federally designated comprehensive cancer center in the northeast, which employs over 4,000 people to support 200,000 patient visits each year, struggled to find a qualified permanent CTR for its Cancer Registry department. The vacancy had been open for several years with little luck on identifying the right talent for this challenging position.

A newly integrated cancer treatment center in Indiana was on a mission to bring together the area’s leading specialists and latest technology to its hospital. This was necessary to establish an advanced level of care to cancer patients along with world-class physicians, advanced treatments, complementary medicine and supportive services. One of the many steps that needed to be done to accomplish this goal was to help create and implement a fully operating cancer registry department with the ultimate goal of getting the department to ACoS CoC accreditation.

MedPartners HIM Oncology Data Management Services took to the time to understand the goals of the facility and called in Proven Talent to meet the challenge. The highly qualified MedPartners HIM consultant reviewed the ACoS CoC standards and immediately began to implement a policy and procedure process for the fledgling program. To date, standards along with policy/procedure have been submitted to Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP) and have been granted approval. Progress still continues to be made with the process of creating a Cancer Committee membership and the client couldn’t be happier with the strides being made to achieve its accreditation. According to standards, Radiation Oncologists, Medical Oncologists, Certified Tumor Registrar(s), Radiologists, Pathologists, Ancillary services (Social Workers, American Cancer Society, etc) and Administration will form the committee with a goal of full establishment by March 31, 2011 and first meeting in mid April 2011.
EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE
After two years of complete cancer data (2011 and 2012), 1 full year of follow-up, Cancer Committee activity, and studies implemented, our consultant will lead this cancer treatment center to its goal of CoC approval by July 2013. The client is ecstatic with the results they have received and the exceptional service provided along the way.
